Duties:
The DSTO Science and Technology (S&T) Structure allows flexibility at most levels, where work is recognised in terms of Research, Professional, Technical and Science & Technology Management job elements. For this position, work is expected to occur as follows:
• Research 10%
• Professional 80%
• Technical 10%
The successful candidate will be part of the Propulsion Systems Branch in Air Vehicles Division and will also interact with staff in other branches, divisions, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Defence contractors.
Under limited direction from senior scientific staff, the successful candidate will:
1. Generally, contribute as a team member to meeting the scientific and technology objectives of the Propulsion Prognostics and Health Management Group. [These objectives in part include a) design and test of experiments with gas turbines and helicopter transmissions, b) analysis of the performance of these systems, and c) evaluation of the effectiveness of health monitoring strategies.]
2. Present results of tests in written and oral form, at levels of generality and technical detail appropriate to that required by both senior scientific staff on the one hand and Defence service personnel on the other.
The successful candidate will possess the following skills, knowledge and attributes:
1. High level of knowledge of engineering procedures and techniques, applicable to experimental and test of aero propulsion systems.
2. High level of knowledge of the fundamental processes of dynamics and thermodynamics.
3. Knowledge of numerical methods and computer programming.
4. Sound written and oral communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with internal and external staff and customers at all levels.
5. Demonstrated ability to be an effective member of a team or to work alone, and to set objectives, meet deadlines, and in particular the ability to communicate effectively with customers.
6. Demonstrated ability to apply a high degree of technical judgement and initiative in resolving problems and the personal drive to carry out a task from its inception through to the completion of the reporting process.
