A career at DSTO
A career at DSTO

DSTO advertises new vacancies in the national press and on this web site every week.

Each DSTO vacancy is associated with specific selection criteria. Therefore, rather than accepting unsolicited resumes and expressions of interest in work at DSTO, we ask prospective applicants to apply for advertised vacancies and to tailor their applications to the selection criteria.  For applicants who are Graduates or PhD Graduates, DSTO accepts applications online all year round. DSTO aims to select the best person for the job by assessing the relative claims of applicants against the selection criteria.

How to apply for an advertised position

Obtain the information package about the position from this website or by using the contact details in the advertisement. The information package will contain a position description, organisation description, selection criteria and details of the relevant professional contact officer.

Read the selection criteria and position description to ensure that you meet the job requirements and have a good understanding of the job. If you require further information about the position, contact the officer nominated in the information package. This person will be able to advise you on all technical aspects of the job and the work area.

Prepare an application following the instructions in the guide how to address selection criteria. Further information is available through the Australian Public Service Commission. It is essential that you include a statement addressing your claims against the selection criteria for the position. Address each selection criterion separately, and explain how you meet this requirement in terms of your abilities, experience, qualifications, achievements and personal qualities.

All Defence job applications are to be submitted through the online application system, prior to the closing date. Applicants who need to submit their application in a different format, or who are unable to apply online, will need to email or phone the professional contact officer prior to the closing date.

You should restrict your responses to the length specified on the online application form, and wherever possible include specific relevant examples of your work.

When you include examples, you should explain:

  • your personal role in the task;
  • the methods you used;
  • any barriers you were able to overcome; and
  • the outcome.

You don’t need to provide written referee reports with your application. However, you should include the names and contact details of two referees who can comment on your work performance. We expect that one of your referees will be your current supervisor or manager. If you don’t want us to contact your referees without advising you first, indicate this in your application.
