Applications, Broad Areas of Work, Important Dates

Applications are now being received for positions to commence through until early 2009.

DSTO is looking for motivated people with undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications with strong academic achievement, proven research skills or relevant experience and well developed communication skills in disciplines listed under the Broad Areas of Work detailed below.  Students in the final year of a degree, and post-graduate students, are encouraged to apply.

Broad Areas of Work

Human, Social and Health Sciences:  Bio-technology, Operations/Simulation, Food Science, Behavioural and Social Science, Environmental Science, Biological Sciences, Physiology & Biomechanics.

Physical Sciences:  Physics, Chemistry (including energetic materials), Electronic Warfare, Materials Science, Optoelectronics, Radar Technology, Sonar Technology, Instrumentation & Control, Evaluation & Experimentation & Acoustics.

Engineering & Technology:  Aeronautical/Aerospace, Aircraft Structures, Electrical/Electronic, Flight Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical, Microwave, Robotics, Weapons Systems/Eng, Systems Eng and Integration, Naval Architecture & Materials Engineering.

Information, Computing & Communications:  Artificial Intelligence & Agents, Information Technology, Communications, Computing/Mathematical, Computing/Programming, Signal Processing, Software Engineering & Telecommunications.

Mathematics:  Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Numerical Simulation/Modelling & Analysis.

Applications

Applications for graduate and post graduate positions with DSTO can be lodged online at any time.  Applications for the current campaign have closed.  The next formal assessment activity will take place during May 2008.  Applicants wishing to be considered for this assessment activity should have submitted applications by April 2008.

Important Dates

2007

September – October

Assessment of current applications takes place.  During this period, applicants may be contacted and offered an interview.

November

Commencement of offers of employment to successful candidates from DSTO’s September 2007 assessment activity.

2008

April

Applications for the first intake of Graduate and Post Graduate Recruitment close.  Initial screening and assessment of applications received to date.

May - June

Coordination of interviews and further assessment.  Applicants may be contacted and offered an interview during this period.  Applicants may also be contacted during this period with notification that their application has not been successful.

July Onwards

Verbal offers of employment commence.  Applicants may be contacted from this time.

Selection of staff at DSTO

DSTO uses a range of different selection methods.  Interviews do not always form part of the selection process.  Applicants should therefore obtain as much information as is available about the research area of interest, and should include all relevant information in their application to maximise their potential to move on to the next stage in the recruitment process.

Salary

Positions may be offered at the following Science & Technology - S&T (Australian Public Service – APS) classification levels:

·         S&T Level 3 (APS 4-5) $50,495 – 60,326, and

·         S&T Level 4 (APS 6) $61,699 - $70,481.

The classification level may be dependent on the level of qualifications attained, knowledge, skills and experience of the successful applicant.

Citizenship Requirements

Applicants must be Australian citizens or eligible and willing to apply for citizenship.  (Australian citizenship may be available to people who have been permanent residents of Australia for two years or more and who wish to make their commitment to Australia.  Further information is available from the Australian Department of Immigration – www.immi.gov.au )

Employment Conditions

The terms and conditions of employment are defined in the Defence Collective Agreement 2006–2009.  These can be discussed in detail during the latter stages of the recruitment process.
