Duties: As part of the Business & Commercialisation Office you will be a member of a small team that provides a high level of advice and support to DSTO scientific Divisions. Defence Scientist Composite Materials

Duties:

The DSTO Science and Technology (S&T) Structure allows flexibility at most levels, where work is recognised in terms of Research, Professional, Technical and Science & Technology Management job elements. For this position, work is expected to occur as follows:

Research 30 %
Professional 50%
Technical 10%
S&T Management 10%.

The successful candidate will be part of the Advanced Materials and Sensor Systems Branch in the Maritime Platforms Division and will also interact with staff in other DSTO divisions, the Australian Defence Force and Defence contractors.

The overall purpose of the position is to work under limited guidance and undertake research and development work in support of the application of polymeric light-weight materials technology to Naval platforms across the capability life cycle. This work will require S&T contributions towards programs to develop new concepts, to provide impartial advice to acquisition and input to through-life management issues for Defence clients. This will require initiative, judgement and some originality in the selection of established principles and techniques and an ability to manage a materials research facility.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake the following major duties:

Under general direction and guidance, conduct scientific research in the area of light-weight materials components and structures to improve the safety, survivability and operational effectiveness of defence platforms
Undertake under limited guidance the fabrication and testing of polymeric and polymer composite materials, independently determining the methods and strategies to be undertaken to conduct the work.
Under general direction manage an advanced composite materials research facility, including conducting inductions and competency testing and ensuring adherence to OH&S policies. Additionally develop planning, policies and procedures for the management of the facility in consultation with stakeholders and management and oversee the implementation when approved.
Document research results in DSTO reports and scientific papers to a high professional standing.
Liaise with Defence clients and external organisations and as required undertake planning and the conduct of field trials in support of research programs.
