&lt;p&gt;The overall purpose of the position is to work under limited guidance and undertake research and development work in support of the application of polymeric light-weight materials technology to Naval platforms across the capability life cycle. This work will require S&amp;amp;T contributions towards programs to develop new concepts, to provide impartial advice to acquisition and input to through-life management issues for Defence clients. This will require initiative, judgement and some originality in the selection of established principles and techniques and an ability to manage a materials research facility.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The successful applicant will be expected to undertake the following major duties:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Under general direction and guidance, conduct scientific research in the area of light-weight materials components and structures&amp;nbsp; to improve the safety, survivability and operational effectiveness of defence platforms &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Undertake under limited guidance the fabrication and testing of polymeric and polymer composite materials, independently determining the methods and strategies to be undertaken to conduct the work.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Under general direction manage an advanced composite materials research facility, including conducting inductions and competency testing and ensuring adherence to OH&amp;amp;S policies. Additionally develop planning, policies and procedures for the management of the facility in consultation with stakeholders and management and oversee the implementation when approved. &lt;br&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Document research results in DSTO reports and scientific papers to a high professional standing.&lt;br&gt;
