H A Wills Structures and Materials Test Centre

H A (Arthur) Wills was the first Chief of DSTOs Structures and Materials Division.

He was among the first defence scientists in the world to recognise the importance of fatigue in aircraft, particularly the effect of stress concentrators such as bolt holes. In 1947 he published a famous seminal paper which defined, for the first time, the technique used today to determine fatigue lives of aircraft structures.
