Cooperative Research Centres

The Australian Department of Defence works to promote a sustainable, competitive Australian industry, science and technology base capable of supporting a technologically advanced Australian Defence Force (ADF). To achieve this, Defence undertakes a range of research, development and innovation activities in partnership with the industry, science and technology community, including participation in Australia\'s Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program.

The CRC Program aims to engage public sector research agencies, universities and industry in research and development. It contributes to the Government's broader industry policy objectives by improving Australia's productivity and international competitiveness. The program was launched in 1990, and there are now approximately 65 CRCs across Australia. Each CRC is funded by participants and the Government for a seven-year term.

Defence has committed over $67 million on participation in relevant CRCs since 1990. This collaboration has been very effective, with benefits for Defence, industry and universities through the mutual transfer of technology. CRCs have also helped to build strong links between researchers and research users, notably in the commercialisation of intellectual property. A range of Defence intellectual property is commercialised through involvement in CRCs. In addition to strengthening Australia's defence capabilities, Defence participation in the CRC Program has wider spinoffs for Australian innovation, industry and wealth.

DSTO is currently involved in the following CRCs:

  • CRC for Advanced Composite Structures;
  • CRC for Diagnostics;
  • CRC for Integrated Engineering Asset Management.
