DSTO scientists meet parliament

Seven DSTO scientists had the opportunity in March to spend a couple of days learning about the political imperatives for the Australian defence science program.

- Seven scientists travelled to Parliament from DSTO sites around Australia.
Hearing from senior politicians including Minister for Innovation, Industry Science and Research Senator the Hon. Kim Carr and Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance, the Hon. Bob McMullan MP, DSTO's representatives learnt about current high level policy issues and how to work with the government.
"Science Meets Parliament" is an annual event run by the Federation of Australian Science and Technology Societies (FASTS) [www.fasts.org], designed to expose Australian scientists to the workings of the Australian government. The broad objectives of Science Meets Parliament are to stimulate and inform Parliamentarians of how science contributes to and informs public policy, and to help professional development of participants through providing them with an insight into political, policy and Parliamentary processes.
DSTO's representatives had the opportunity to discuss the research work they undertake for DSTO, when they met with the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, and the Opposition spokesperson for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Bob Baldwin MP.
The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is part of Australia's Department of Defence. DSTO's role is to ensure the expert, impartial and innovative application of science and technology to the defence of Australia and its national interests.
