Soldiers and athletes go for gold

Australian soldiers will benefit from the same programs as elite athletes under a new collaborative approach led by DSTO and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

Looking at the field of ‘human performance’, the DSTO and the AIS will work together with CSIRO and National ICT Australia (NICTA) to share skills, knowledge and resources in developing research programs to benefit the nation’s high performance sports people and soldiers.
Jointly opened by the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, and Minister for Sport, the Hon. Kate Ellis MP, the first workshop on ‘Frontiers of Human Performance’, held in March, examined the close relationship between preparing elite athletes for competition and preparing high-performance soldiers for combat.
The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is part of Australia's Department of Defence. DSTO's role is to ensure the expert, impartial and innovative application of science and technology to the defence of Australia and its national interests.
