Rear Admiral (RADM) Moffit noted at the launch that systems integration had been acknowledged in the Defence White Paper as being critical to achieving the capability edge while delivering capability on time and budget.
He said the White Paper explicitly recognised the increasing need for independent expertise to reduce capability risk and integrate capabilities into the force structure.
DSTO and DMO have jointly established the DSI-TA as a strategic initiative to examine complex systems integration issues, undertaking systems engineering analysis and evaluating alternative capability solutions.
Systems integration issues can often lead to significant delays in acquisition projects, costing Defence millions of dollars. DSI-TA is designed to overcome some of the problems associated with systems integration and achieving greater risk reduction efforts, particularly during the early stages of major project acquisitions.
DSI-TA is headed by Dr Nanda Nandagopal as the Chief Systems Integration Officer for Defence.
The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is part of Australia's Department of Defence. DSTO's role is to ensure the expert, impartial and innovative application of science and technology to the defence of Australia and its national interests.
