Q. Do you need to be an Australian citizen to get a job at DSTO?
A. DSTO requires that employees are Australian citizens or eligible and willing to apply for citizenship. Australian citizenship is available to people who have been permanent residents of Australia for two years or more and who wish to make their commitment to Australia. Q. Do I need a security clearance to work for DSTO?
A. DSTO employees are often involved in classified work, and must therefore qualify for a Department of Defence security clearance. Depending on the level of security clearance required, successful applicants must provide information on their identity and background for up to the past 10 years. This may include details about previous employment, education, travel and residences, relatives, contact with officials from other countries, and membership of clubs and associations.

A. DSTO employees are civilians in the Department of Defence
Q. How many people does DSTO employ?
A. DSTO employs approximately 2300 people across a number of sites. The biggest sites are in Melbourne, Victoria and Edinburgh (near Adelaide), South Australia.
Q. Who should I contact if I have a proposal, product or service that I believe would be of great value to the Department of Defence?
A. Defence has established the Defence Unsolicited Proposals Gateway to handle these type of enquiries. The Unsoliticted Proposals Gateway ensures that unsolicited proposals received by the Department of Defence are evaluated in a consistent and appropriate manner. Two types of proposals may be submitted through the gateway: Unsolicited Innovative Proposals and Unsolicited Promotional Product Offers.
