Deputy Chief Defence Scientist - Platform and Human Systems

Dr Ian Sare is the Deputy Chief Defence Scientist (Platforms and Human Systems).

Dr Sare is responsible for guiding DSTO's programs that support Australia's current and future platforms capabilities and the integration of humans therein.

Keys areas of research under his direction include material sciences, structures, propulsion, aerodynamics and human sciences.

In addition to the platform systems domain, Deputy CDS (Platform & Human Systems) has the stewardship for guiding the development of technologies supporting Defence in the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear environment and in the performance of Australian Defence Force members in military tasks.

Deputy CDS (Platform & Human Systems) is responsible for the leadership and management of the following organisational elements of DSTO:  

Air Vehicles Division

Air Vehicles Division provides scientific leadership and support for the planning, acquisition, cost-effective operation, and through-life support of military aircraft engines and airframes.

Air Operations Division

Air Operations Division provides scientific leadership and support for air-related force development and equipment acquisition processes. It also supports the operational effectiveness of in-service assets, through mission modelling and analysis together with the application of systems integration and assessment technologies.

Maritime Platforms Division

Maritime Platforms Division supports the conceptual development, acquisition, and through-life support of maritime platforms (and in specialised cases, air and land platforms) by the application of science and technology.

Human Protection and Performance Division 

The role of the Human Protection and Performance Division is to optimise the protection and performance of Australian Defence Force personnel operating in hazardous and demanding environments.

Maritime Operations Division

Maritime Operations Division provides scientific leadership and support for the planning, acquisition, cost-effective operation, and through-life support of Australian maritime forces.

Scientific Engineering Services

Scientific Engineering Services provides integrated multi-disciplinary, leading edge and rapid response engineering solutions to the S&T Program.
