The Deputy Chief Defence Scientist (Information and Weapon Systems), Dr Warren Harch, is responsible for shaping and directing DSTO's information-centric programs covering:

  • Intelligence and Security
  • Joint Operations and Information
  • Strategy and Capability Planning

The Deputy Chief Defence Scientist (Information and Weapon Systems) supports Australia's current and future military capability and contributes to national security.

Keys areas of research under his direction include adaptive distributed systems, information assurance - robust survivable secure electronic information infrastructure, computer network defence, computer forensics, very high assurance devices, robust self organising communications networks, machine semantic understanding through symbolic languages, augmented cognition, augmentation of human decision-making, machine learning, sensing of transitory and hidden objects, advanced sensing and sensor processing, and heterogeneous sensor information fusion.

In addition, DCDS (Information and Weapon Systems) has a wider responsibility for the development of Network CentricWarfare (NCW) capabilities across the whole of DSTO.

DCDS (Information and Weapon Systems) is also DSTO's Chief Information Officer with whole of DSTO responsibilities for information management and the operation and development of DSTO's research networks and computing infrastructure.

DCDS (Information and Weapon Systems) is  responsible for the leadership and management of the following organisational elements of DSTO:

  • Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence Division
  • Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Division
  • Land Operations Division
  • Electronic Warfare and Radar Division
  • Weapons Systems Division 
  • Science Corporate Information Services

DCDS (Information and Weapon Systems) is also Head of DSTO's Edinburgh site.
