The successful handover in April 2003 of the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) to the Australian Defence Force capped 40 years of DSTO pioneering research.

JORN provides 24-hour military surveillance of Australia's northern approaches, but also serves civilian purposes such as weather forecasting and the prevention of illegal entry, smuggling and unlicensed fishing.
