Next Generation Combatant - ANZAC Class

HMAS Sydney at anchor near Pulau Tioman, Malaysia during Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD 2014.

DST is providing science and technology support to project SEA 5000, which involves the acquisition of a fleet of eight new Future Frigates.

The SEA 5000 frigate was first articulated in the 2011 Defence Capability Plan (DCP) as the Future Frigate project.

The scope for this project is the acquisition of a fleet of eight new Future Frigates, which will be larger than the ANZAC Class, designed and equipped with a strong emphasis on anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

Phase 1 of the SEA 5000 project is focussed on the project definition, design and building of the Future Frigate. The Initial Operational Capability of the first Future Frigate is expected in the 2027 - 2030 timeframe.

DST is leading a number of studies supporting First Pass consideration for the SEA 5000 project. These studies are in the areas of capability assessment, combat system, platform system, human factors and emerging technologies.
