- DSTO scientific publications
DSTO has several goals for its publications:
- To communicate the results of the research program and fulfil DSTO’s reporting responsibilities to the Department of Defence;
- To record the results of DSTO’s research program;
- To communicate the results of scientific research and technical information to Australian industry and academia; and
- To increase awareness of and enhance the reputation of DSTO.
Wherever possible, work is published in professional journals or in the proceedings of conferences. Frequently, however, there is no appropriate forum for unclassified work that is often defence-specific or of interest to only a specific audience. Intellectual property and security considerations often mean that publication in the open literature is not possible. The DSTO Report series meets this requirement and is an important avenue for dissemination of the work of DSTO.
The DSTO Report series comprises:
- Research Reports, which describe important discoveries, new knowledge at a fundamental level, or major research results.
- Technical Reports that describe new applications of existing knowledge. These may include solutions of important, complex or specialist problems using established and accessible knowledge, new theories or methods, substantial routine professional investigations, critical literature reviews, and interpreted systematic test results and observations.
- General Documents which record information that will be of general interest.
- Technical Notes which report work that is concerned with the solution of limited and applied problems.
All DSTO public release reports are held in the DSTO Scientific Publications repository.
DSTO reports are distributed as widely as the limitations of each report allow. They are available in electronic or paper format from the Reports Distribution Officer in the DSTO Research Library
