The Australian Defence Force is investigating replacement options for the air combat capabilities currently provided by the F/A-18 and F-111 fleets.

- Joint Strike Fighter
The aircraft being considered to replace the F/A-18 and F-111 fleets is the F-35 aircraft also known as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The F-35 Lightning II aircraft is being developed as a fifth-generation, stealthy, multi-role fighter for the US and UK armed forces and allies.
DSTO is providing direct support to the new air combat capability project by:
- Providing technical risk assessments on the air vehicle, mission systems, and weapons systems
- Providing operational analysis support
- Assisting in the System Development and Demonstration phase of the project
- Developing a national technology base in new JSF technologies
- Assisting Australian industry engage with the JSF program
