Simulation

Research Project

Start Date:
12 October, 2011
Project Status:
Active

Simulation is a key enabling technology for Defence, supporting such functions as capability development and acquisition, training and mission rehearsal, operations, force structure analysis and R&D.

DSTO is a major developer, user and manager of simulation within Defence, coordinating simulation, modelling and experimentation for multiple Defence agencies through:

  • Providing realistic and immersive simulations that allow the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to safely and effectively test and evaluate military platforms and other systems.
  • Supporting training, mission planning and force structure analysis.
  • Developing research applications that support capability acquisition, risk analysis and establishment of future capabilities including the Joint Amphibious Capability, Air Warfare Destroyer, Multi-Role Helicopter and Joint Strike Fighter.
  • Enabling Defence operations to be rehearsed and evaluated at relatively low cost compared to real world trials.
  • Offering access to sophisticated networks that enable real-time, secure communication with other defence facilities around the world, making it possible to participate in large-scale joint military exercises.

Specialised facilities

DSTO routinely employs simulation to solve problems and explore capability options.  Techniques include self-contained (constructive) simulations, human-in-loop and hardware-in-loop simulations. Significant DSTO modelling and simulation facilities include:

  • Air Operations Simulation Centre (AOSC)
  • Air Operations Experimentation Centre (AOEC)
  • Advanced Distributed Simulation Laboratory (ADSL)
  • Mission Systems Research Centre (MSRC)
  • Future Operations Centre Analysis Laboratory (FOCAL)
  • Survivability Integration Laboratory (SIL)
  • Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Analysis and Integration Laboratory (ISRAIL)
  • Joint Decision Support Centre (JDSC)
  • Synthetic Environment Research Facility (SERF)
  • Maritime Experimentation Laboratory (MEL)
  • ANZAC Combat System Integration Laboratory (ACSIL)
  • Littoral Command Support Laboratory (LCSL)
  • Concept Exploration & Analysis Laboratory (CEAL)
  • Centre for Evaluation, Simulation and Analysis of Weapons (CESAW)
  • Missile Simulation Centre (MSC)
