- Human Sciences Forum: sponsoring communities of practice
The Hub promotes and sponsors "Communities of Practice" which are set up by members of the wider Hub community. The Hub also assists in the coordination of an annual Defence Human Sciences Symposium (DHSS).
The HS Forum function offers a path for members to seek Hub assistance and sponsorship for Human Science community activities they consider to be interesting and important. This function will provide support and encouragement for future meetings of the DHSS. The HS Forum is composed of the Communities of Practice: Human as an Information Processor, Training Technology, Organisational Development, Social and Organisational Systems, Teamwork.
Human as an Information Processor
This community plans and coordinates two related research thrusts: Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Human Cognitive Processing (HCP). HCI research includes design of interfaces between military operators and their equipment, carried out widely across DSTO. Both input and output technologies are considered. HCP research at DSTO, addresses in particular the cognitive, organisational and social aspects of complex cognition, including Command and Control effectiveness.
Training Technology
This community will facilitate and promote DSTO research related to training. The mission is to articulate and develop awareness of contemporary issues in learning, training, and education and also of strategies that can support DSTO research in this area.
Social and Organisational Systems
This community of practise will facilitate and promote the increasing DSTO research work relating to the social and organisational systems that influence the effectiveness of people working within the military and the ADO generally.
Organisational Development
This community brings together DSTO scientists with expertise in the areas of individual work performance, teamwork, and leadership, with particular emphasis on training. Our mission is to develop evidence-based practice in these areas, both within DSTO as an organisation, and in support of our Defence clients.
Teamwork
This community brings together scientists conducting research on the factors underlying effective team and collective performance in military domains. The community is particularly interested in furthering understanding on valid and reliable methods of assessing team processes and states such as situation awareness, team cohesion and efficacy, communication, coordination, and leadership.
